Safe and Sensible Weight Loss Diets for Children

Sometimes it happens, you don't realize it at first, but suddenly you do, your child is overweight, may even be obese. Your child is not alone in this because over 17% of all children in the United States are obese. Stopping this weight gain once it has started is going to be a challenge but you can get it under control if you put your mind to it to help your child.

The first thing you need to do is to take your child to their doctor and ask them for an evaluation. You doctor will be able to help you and your child sit down and create a healthier diet plan. They will evaluate how serious the condition is and from there be able to help you figure out what to do. Children grow at different rates and a lot of parents aren't sure what is healthy weight gain and what isn't and that is why the doctor is so important.

If your doctor decides that a lifestyle change is in order then you can ask your doctor to assist you in setting up a healthy diet plan or he may just refer you to a specialist like a nutritionist for the help that you and your child need.

There are two different and popular schools of thought when it comes to dieting when it comes to children. Some doctors are going to suggest that you put them on a low fat and low calories diet. This is one that has been used for decades and most are familiar with this kind of diet. It also is one that you have to make sure that you count every calorie that the child takes in.

The other one is based on what is called the glycemic index. This particular diet plan is growing in popularity especially for children because it's a lot easier on them and no one has to worry about counting the calories each time the child eats something.

No matter which diet the doctor might recommend, it will mean that you need to be prepared to start serving a lot healthier foods and lots and lots of fresh fruits and veggies and cut out all of the sugary sodas and all that junk food kids love.

It is also important that you provide your child with a good support system. Being on a diet and trying to lose weight is a hard job for anyone but even more so for children and they need a lot more support than a lot of adults would.

The best way to support them of course is by simply teaching them by example. This means that you and the entire family need to switch to a more healthy eating lifestyle. This means that the whole family needs to cut back on the unhealthy foods as well. This will help your child to make the right choices on their own.
