Understanding Low Carb High Protein Diets And Why They Are Not Always A Good Option

If you are looking for a good diet you probably have been told by many that one of the best diets you can go on is a low carb diet. Diets like the Atkins or the Zone are big on this concept and they are great for getting some temporary weight off of your body. However, you need to take into consideration your overall health of your body and not just shedding the pounds. By cutting out or cutting way too many carbs out of your diet can end up being more of a problem to your healthy than keeping them in your diet.

When you are on this kind of a diet it also includes high protein content and will restrict you from eating things like breads, cookies and other carbs that are considered simple carbs with a high sugar content, even fruit can be considered something you should cut down on with these diets.

The acceptable foods on these kinds of diets would include a lot of meat, eggs, some tofu and soy products. Some of the vegetables that are allowed are the leafy green vegetables, squash, zucchini and broccoli. For instance a typical meal on this kind of diet might consist of a vegetable stew with beef, a chicken salad or a steak with some veggies for a side dish. You will find no fruits or complex carbs on their list of acceptable diet foods. No fruit, hmmm, that sounds odd and well, not quite healthy when you come to think of it.

The way these kinds of diets are suppose to help you lose weight is by getting rid of foods with simple carbs and getting rid of calories. So, if the body has enough of the nutrients it needs, it will fee full longer. Some, not all of the nutritional needs of your body are met on this kind of a diet so you need to be careful and make sure that you eat enough foods that contain enough minerals and vitamins your body requires.

One of the main concerns about this kind of a diet is the risk of developing ketosis. This is something that happens when your body is not getting enough energy from the glucose that your body uses to convert into energy. If your body does not receive the right kind of sugar that is found in carbs then your body will have no choice but to find it elsewhere and that means it will then take from the fat that is stored in your body. Those who are gung ho for low carb and high protein combo diets will say that's the whole idea, but they don't stop to realize that once the fat stored in your body has been depleted the body will then move onto taking the needed glucose from your muscles and organs, after which your body will shut down because it doesn't have enough proper fuel to function. Another issue with diets that are high in protein will also cause higher levels of uric acid which can cause gout and loss of calcium which will decrease your bone density.

Understand that a lot of the carbs that are available are extremely healthy. For instance whole grains are an excellent source of the B vitamins and they also help to regulate the insulin in your body. Whole grains do their part in stabilizing your body's metabolism. Fruits are extremely important because they are filled with antioxidants and fiber that help fight free radicals in your body and help keep you regulated.

Make sure to know what the food you eat contains before you eat them don't just blinding go low carb, you may be taking away from your body more than you are giving back.
